Several of these works are responses to a photograph or a painting. A Still Life by Van Gogh was inspired by Vase with Irises Against a Yellow Background. "Adam's House" refers to a watercolor by Edward HopperJames with His Prize-Winning Chicken considers the photo on the dust jacket of Farm Boys: Lives of Gay Men from the Rural Midwest.

Listening to Cicadas was published in the 2002 edition of the Wisconsin Poets' Calendar. Wild sky appeared in Trains and Rain: Poems of Lust, Dust, Rust and Obsession by Lonesome Traveller Publishing. James with His Prize-Winning Chicken was published in Möbius. War of Attrition appeared in Tasty Morsels: An Anthology of Short-Short Fiction by Lonesome Traveller Publishing.
