What precautions should I take when there is a thunderstorm?

When there is a thunderstorm, all electronic devicesespecially computersshould be unplugged to avoid damage from harmful power surges. Not only should all power supply cords be unplugged, but also any telephone cables that are connected to the computer. A "surge suppressor" can help reduce the risk of damage. Many new surge suppressors also have additional jacks to protect against power surges that travel through the telephone line. However, while these surge suppressors add extra protection from power surges, the best protection is had by unplugging all power supply cords and telephone cables.

How can a storm damage my computer?
Whenever there is a thunderstorm, it is possible that lightning, or an electrical power surge caused by lightning, may damage one or more of your computer components with excessive voltage. Modems are especially susceptible, because a harmful power surge has two ways to reach the modemthrough the electrical power grid and through the telephone line to which the modem is connected.

How do I know if my modem has been damaged?
A telltale sign that a modem has been damaged by a power surge is that the computer reports "no dial tone," even though the modem is properly connected to a telephone line. The computer may also report that the modem is "not responding." If other components have been damaged, you may find that the computer will not operate at all. If any of these symptoms occur soon after a thunderstorm, it is extremely likely that one or more computer components have been damaged by a power surge.

What can I do if my modem has been damaged?
If your modem, or some other computer component, has been damaged by a power surge, the component(s) may be repaired or replaced. It is often less expensive to replace a modem than to try to repair it. Of course, before replacing any computer components, it is best to have a qualified computer technician diagnose the exact problem and determine whether or not a modem or other component needs to be repaired or replaced.
