If anyone (with the possible exception of Lake Speed) had a name that says "NASCAR Racer", then Buckshot Jones has got it! Unfortunately for Buckshot, however, that usually is as far as it goes. He began the 1999 Winston Cup season with high hopes and plans to be "a stong contender" for Rookie of the Year honours. But the stats tell otherwise: 10 starts in 1999 out of 34 possible races with NO wins and NO top 10 finishes, and a measly $320,725 in winnings. In 2000 Buckshot started only 1 Winston Cup race, The NAPA 500 on Nov 20th from the Atlanta Motor Speedway In that final race of 2000, Buckshot started from the 29th position and finished 37th and brought home a stunning $35, 275.

For most of 2000, Buckshot dropped down to Busch Series. My buddy Steve Zwicke is a big fan of Busch Racing, but compared to Winston Cup, it's sorta like kissing your sister. So how did ol' Buckshot do in Busch in 2000?? Heh heh.....do ye have to ask???

Actually, Buckshot didnt do THAT badly. His best Busch finish was 2nd in the Touchstone Energy 300. He finished 21st in the standings with $478,420 in total winnings. But his average start was 27th and average finish was 24th, and I do believe THAT says it all. Even though it landed him a ride with Petty Enterprises and the #44 car for the 2001 Winston Cup season

So how did our favorite Lost Soul of NASCAR do in 2001driving for Petty Enterprises?? Do you even have to ask??

The correct answer is he finished 41st in the standings.

ALWAYS the Year of Double Zero!

Buckshot began the 2002 Winston Cup season on the bubble. And we're not talking those Lawrence Welk bubbles with all the fine champagne music to go along with.

By the MNBA 400 at Atlanta in March the word was out that Buckshot was soon to be fired despite a 12th place finish. His best ever with Petty Emterprises!! Imagine my suprise!! The goofiest thing about it all was the hot rumour that Joe Nemechek was a leading candidate for the ride.

Meanwhilst, Double Zero finished off his career with Petty with a somewhat respectable 19th the next week at Darlington. Followed by a 40th place at Bristol and a 26th place at Texas. His final ride for Petty was true to form for our favorite Lost Soul.....a 33rd place finish at Martinsville that ended with a crash on lap 483.

Steve Grissom, a former Craftsman truck driver was called up from Petty's engine shop to take over the 44 car at Talledega the next week. Grissom piloted that ride to a stunning 25th place finish at Talladega. Amidst a flurry of Silly Season rumours, Grissom piloted the 44 car until July, then returned to his R&D role with Petty when Kyle hired a new driver for the remainer of 2002. The funny irony of this is that they driver was Jerry Nadeau, who was released from his #25 ride with Rick Hendrick in May. What makes this funny and ironic is not that Nadeau was hired by Petty, but that Rick Hendrick hired none other than Front Row Joe to pilot the #25.

These days, Sept. 2, 2002 as this is written, Buckshot has been working on his Dad's farm, producing a second offspring due in 2003, and waiting for the phone to ring. I'm sure the sponsors are lined up like so many dominoes. Cue the champagne music.....

Been Farmin' Long???
